TURTLE FRIENDLY LIGHTING
Copper Lantern Lighting offers turtle friendly options to our line of decorative lanterns.
We are committed to sea turtle conservation and minimal impact of artificial lighting on all wildlife.
Sea turtles are an endangered species. Females must come ashore to lay their eggs in the sand. Artificial light near the beach can deter females from nesting and can disorient hatchling sea turtles from returning safely to the ocean. Turtle friendly beachside lighting is important to coastal communities that work closely with Wildlife Fish & Game Commissions to ensure sea turtle conservation. Turtle safe lighting fixtures that accept low wattage, long wavelength, amber, LED sources are recommended and in some coastal communities are mandatory.
Sea Turtle lighting recommendations approve the following solutions for all exterior fixtures (structural and landscape lights) on the seaward and the shore perpendicular sides of a building (and on the landward side of a building if visible from the beach). Copper Lantern Lighting can re-work any of our decorative lanterns to comply with approved lamping requirements. Here are some solutions available to us:
: Downward direction – Light sockets can be recessed up into the hood of the lantern. We can tuck the bulb up inside the top of the lantern.
: Well Shielded light source - We can add a hand-blown white glass cylinder to the base of the fixture, facing upward to diffuse the light output. This re-directs the light source hidden in the hood to reflect off the cylinder creating the appearance that the light is coming from the cylinder.
: Re-lamping – Use of LPS (Low Pressure Sodium) bulbs at 18W, 35W
– Use of red, orange or amber LED (Light Emitting Diodes),
not filters
or – Use of true red neon light
: Spectral Power – Use any other bulbs that produce light visibility wavelength
Of 560 nm (nanometers) or longer.
Copper Lantern Lighting combines the durability of solid copper or brass and the lamping options to produce acceptable light output with beautiful design and function to ensure your choice of exterior lighting will not only enhance your home or property, but live in harmony with surrounding wildlife and nature’s harsh environmental elements.
